Men’s Reserve Final
O’Mahony’s 2-0 DreamTeam
O’Mahony’s were strong favourites coming in to this one, so the DreamTeam, backboned by a lot of the upcoming talent in the club had nothing to lose. They started at a ferocious pace, with Mike Hallissey and Tim Crowley taking no prisoners at the back for the young DreamTeam side. After a couple of attacks down the left-hand side, Aaron O’Callaghan put Shane Randles away, and his shot beat Mahony’s keeper Dan Keane, but Philip (one L) Duggan managed to get it off the line. For the first ten minutes of the half, Mahony’s were camped in their half, but eventually got to grips with the game, and some good passing saw Alan Cassidy put clear, and his shot looked destined for the net, but Kieran Fitzgibbons in goal for the DreamTeam managed to save it. Michael O’Connor followed up though, and volleyed home the rebound from 18 yards. In the very next attack, Sean Murphy from O’Mahony’s sent in a deep cross from the left which hit the crossbar, and Alan Cassidy was in the right place to put Mahony’s 2-0 in front.
In the second half, O’Mahony’s showed all their experience, and “closed up shop”. The DreamTeam threw caution to the wind, and Steven O’Shea showed some lovely touches, while Mike Hallissey got forward well and tested the evergreen Dan Keane in Mahony’s goal four times. But no breakthrough came, and O’Mahony’s captain Shannon Ryan accepted the winner’s trophy for the second year running.
Ladies Final
DSL Coastal Properties 3-1 FloGas
The second game on Friday night saw the 2008 champions DSL play the surprise package of this year’s tournament. Flogas, captained by KDL league winner Aoife Mullins had a number of young players who had represented a Kerry XI against a touring German Team recently, while DSL had Inter Kenmare stalwarts like Lisa O’Shea, Laura O’Sullivan and Majella O’Sullivan. DSL Started really well, and scored after 5 minutes with Majella O’Sullivan crossing for Lisa O’Shea who finished really well. Flogas recovered well though, and Claire O’Sullivan (who was outstanding all night) and Caroline O’Sullivan-Down had good shots just over. Coming up to half-time, the game was flowing from end to end, and DSL made it 2-0 when the tournament’s outstanding midfielder, Linda O’Connor, passed to Christina Foley and she buried the chance. Just before half time though Claire O’Sullivan got the breakthrough for FloGas after a good passing move to make it 2-1. DSL were now worried at half-time. FloGas started the second half better, and Grace Christian, Rachel Hawker and Claire O’Sullivan really took the game to their opponents. DSL held out though, and Laura and Majella O’Sullivan really played well at this stage, and passed the ball fluently. Lisa O’Shea kept playing close to the FloGas goal, andas her opponents kept on attacking, she got a number of chances. At this stage, it was almost one on one between her and the FloGas keeper, Michelle O’Connor every time they attacked, and Michelle made no less than 4 point-blank saves, before Lisa bagged her second goal. The final score was 3-1 to DSL, and captain Majella O’Sullivan got her hands on the winners trophy for the second year running.
Men’s Premier Final
Sneem Santos 3-2 Stonebusters
The last game of the night really lived up to expectations, a real sevens classic. Sneem Santos lost Ronan and Mike Hussey before kick-off, which was a blow to their team, as the two boys are quality players. They made up for it though, and Shane Cremin showed great skill on the left, skinning his defender before sending a low cross in which eluded everyone except Sneem’s Jimmy O’Brien, and he just doesn’t miss from 6 yards. The Stonebusters put this behind them, and with Donal Casey winning everything in the air and PJ Reidy passing the ball well, they built from the back, Derdie Casey had a good shot saved, and Connie Cremin had a left-footer just wide. Sneem attached quickly all the time though, and Brendan Teahan put O’Brien away, and PJ Reidy stopped him for a free. From the resultant free kick, Darren Breen absolutely smashed it in off the bar, giving the ‘keeper no chance. In the second half, it was apparent that Sneem were happy with their lead, and they sat back. The Stonebusters pushed up, and as a result, all the play was in the Sneem half. And 5 minutes in, Connie Cremin got his head to a Dan Cahalane corner, to give the Stonebusters a lifeline. With 4 minutes left in the game, Connie Cremin popped up again, guiding a good shot in off the post from 15 yards. 2-2 with three minutes left, and it looked like we were heading for extra time. John D. O’Sullivan from Sneem wasn’t happy with this though, and he came up from the back for a corner, and powered his way through the box to head home the winner. This was a brilliant win for Sneem, and they have Brendan Teahan, Jimmy O’Brien and JD O’Sullivan to thank as their best players on the night. Connie Cremin and Donal O’Sullivan-Casey were best for the Stonebusters.
In no particular order, we would like to thank:
Donal O’Sullivan-Casey, Denis O’Brien, Gert Kruis, Paul Cassidy, Alan O’Sullivan, Charlie Vaughan, Michelle O’Sullivan-Casey, Cian O’Siochriú, Jimmy O’Sullivan, Craig VanDeVenter, Ben VanDeVenter Majella O’Sullivan, Shane Dalton, PJ Reidy, Ian Miles, Eoin Finnegan, Philip Duggan, Shannon Ryan,Declan O’Neill, Matt Zoeller, Gary Cassidy, Steven O’Shea, Tim Crowley, Paudie Granville, Padraig and Siobhan Jones at the Coachmans.
