Inter Kenmare Seven-a-Side Day 8 Friday 30th
The last of the group games were held on Friday, and we saw three tough games.
First we had DSL Coastal against The Galway Girls, where DSL did enough to hang onto a 0-0 draw and make sure they stay away from FloGas in the semi-finals. DSL Coastal have found the group games tough, they have had one injury and absentee after each other, and have not been able to field a full team for any game. Depending on results elsewhere and on how physio goes they could be bringing back some of their big guns for the semi finals though.. In this game DSL’s American loan sigining , Jess, was their stand-out player, and led to them having the better chances. Lisa O’Shea tried everything to get through the Galway Girls’ defence, but couldn’t get past Aisling Harrington and Aoife Godfrey who were excellent at the back. No goals then, and a point apiece for the defences.
The second game was a classic, between Con’s Restaurant and FloGas. This was an even battle, with Con’s possibly on top, but unable to beat Michelle O’Connor. Roisin Boyle had a top-corner effort turned over, and Michelle O’Sullivan-Casey also had a shot blocked. Caroline O’Sullivan-Down was super for Con’s, while Roisin Bouyle and Michelle Casey are benefitting from the run of group games and look to be coming into form. For FloGas, the ‘keeper Michelle was good, and Deirdre Ward was the other dominant player for them. Two good teams here, and wouldn’t mind seeing them play again later on in the competition.
In the third game we had Trappatonis against the free-scoring Morgan’s Muppets. Reports of Morgan’s being short players turned out to be false, in fact they had a full team and even gave Chris O’Sullivan his first start. Chris narrowly missed scoring the perfect hat-trick in this game, he had one with his head, one with the left and one with the right foot but managed to send them all wide. Morgan’s were very dominant in the game though Trappatonis battled very hard and had David and Mattie Clifford to thank for two good break in the first half, and Conor Daly for some solid defending. This Foley was also called on, and over the course of the game he stopped a point-blank shot from Chris O’Sullivan, a header and a kick-off from Alan Cassidy that was heading for the corner. Morgan’s eventually did get the winner, Alan Cassidy put a pin-point ball over Conor Daly’s head and onto Steven O’Brien’s foot and the tournament top scorer (so far) doesn’t miss from 10 yards.
All the quarter final fixtures are now decided, while the ladies move on to the semi finals. The mens quarters are next Wednesday and Friday, all of the fixtures are up to date below. There are some guaranteed great games, do your best to try and make it.
Inter Kenmare Seven-a-Side Day 7 Thurs July 29th
Three games on Thursday, and each one decided the final placings in the groups. A very tense night, with some players cracking under pressure, and some more players loving it.
In Game 1, the Village Inn dominated the Young Guns and won 3-0, with Derek Harrington and Glen Egan (2) getting the goals. The Young Guns were down to 6 men, and the Village Inn played the game at a high tempo and kept the pressure on all the way through. This made life easier for the Village Inn defenders Ian Healy-Rae and Patrick Scannell, who never looked under pressure. Glen Egan was everywhere in this game, and deserved his two goals.
Game 2 was The Stonebusters v NAMA, and this went to the Stonebusters on a 1-0 score line. The Stonebusters haven’t been getting too many goals in this tournament, and were pushed all the way by NAMA here. “Flash” looked good for NAMA, but he couldn’t get by Donal Casey. Mark Granville was providing cover for Donal, and NAMA couldn’t get in. Connie Cremin’s winning goal was a beauty, a volley from waist height that flew into thex net.
Game 3 was the best of the night, and threw up a big upset, where Café Mocha beat O’Mahony’s 1-0. The game started off with O’Mahony’s attacking, but Café Mocha had Hugh Murphy and Marcus McNally running hard and trying to catch their opponents on the break. Marcus won a free kick just outside the box, and Hugh Murphy stepped up and wobbled a cross/shot/slice into the top corner. This meant O’Mahonys had to chase the game, and this suited Café Mocha perfectly. Mike Donovan, Conor McSwiney and Pat Twomey blocked and intercepted all game long, and Café Mocha nearly got a second through the hard running of Mike Granville, who “nut-megged” Sean O’Leary, ran the length of the pitch and set up Marcus McNally for a shot that was saved. Café Mocha ‘keeper Rory O’Sullivan also made two excellent saves, one in each half to keep Café Mocha in the lead. This means that Mocha go into the Premier competition, and O’Mahony’s are confined to the reserve for the second year running.
Friday night brings us to the end of the group games, 3 matches from 7pm, see you there.
Inter Kenmare Seven-a-Side Day 6 Wed July 28th
Middle of week two already, these games are flying by. On a lovely Wednesday evening, we had 5 games, including two super ladies games.
In Game 1, Team Actimel must have been taking Actimel because they put in a superb performance to beat the reigning champions Sneem on a 2-1 score line. Actimel took the lead through a
In the second game, Morgan’s Muppets continued their cruise through the groups with a 2-0 win over the Blackwater Tavern. Dara Crowley and Mike Tim O’Sullivan got the goals. Alan Cassidy was very comfortable on the ball for Morgan’s, and Gary Cassidy will be pleased with another clean sheet.
The ladies’ competition is now getting serious, and we had two cracking games on Wednesday. In Game 3, Con’s Restaurant beat the Galway Girls 3-1. Michelle O’Sullivan(2) and Caroline O’Sullivan-Down banged in the goals for Con’s. Katie O’Shea got one back for the
In game 4 we saw a huge upset with FloGas beating champions DSL Coastal 4-0. DSL have won the last two competitions, but they may be under pressure to win this year. DSL started with 6 players on the night, with captain Majella O’Sullivan reduced to staying on a chair at the gate because of an ankle injury. FloGas used the space well, Michelle O’Connor kept landing kick outs into the opposition box, Caroline McCarthy and Claire O’Sullivan ran the DSL defence ragged and the result looked after itself. Aoife Mullins (manager of FloGas) can be happy with this win, but would do well not to underestimate DSL Coastal if they meet again later in the competition …
Finally, O’Mahony Engineering beat Pat Reddan Tar and Chip 7-0. In a one-sided second half Mahony’s rattled in 6 goals, with Shannon Ryan (3) Sean O’Leary (2) Killian Murphy and Denis O’Shea getting the goals.
There are two nights of group games left now, with 3 games on Thursday and three on Friday. 6.30 start both nights. See you there.
Inter Kenmare Seven-a-Side Day 5 Tuesday July 27th
First game up was a strange game between the Trappatonis and the Pink Panthers. The Panthers were short players, but fielded a team anyway to fulfil the fixture. And they nearly caused an upset by giving the Trappatonis no end of trouble. Tommy Granville scored first for Trappatonis, but Steven O’Leary launched himself into the air with a huge roar to win a penalty for the Panthers, which Eoin Finnegan scored to level the game. Numbers told in the second half, and the Trapaptonis ran out 3-1 winners with two good goals from Mattie Clifford.
The second game was a tight affair, with Connor-Scarteens and Café Mocha playing our a 0-0 draw. Patrick O’Dwyer made a few good breaks for Connor-Scarteens but couldn’t get through, while the main threat for Café Mocha was Marcus McNally who had a powerful game in the middle. This result ensures that Connor-Scarteens now qualify in first place in the group.
The third and last game from Tuesday resulted in a 2-0 win for “Team ?” with a goal in each half. The first was from Andrej Scasny early on. The game was even, Mike P O’ Sullivan was running things for Kelmac while Martin Urbisch was very solid for “Team ?” who could sit back a little and protect their lead. As so often happens in the sevens, Kelmac had to go and chase the game, and they were picked off with a break-away goal, Chris Courtney finishing a header to the net to seal the 2-0 win.
Wednesday night has a full 5 games, the pick of them looks to be Morgans Muppets who have stormed through their games so far versus The Blackwater Tavern. See you there.
Inter Kenmare Sevens Day 4 Monday 26th
The start of the second week means the groups are starting to take shape, and as a result teams are really getting down to business.
In the first game last night Morgan’s Muppets moved right up to the top of the bookies favourites list with a resounding 8-0 win over the Desperados. There were four goalsin each half, with Mike Tim O’Sullivan (3), Steven O’Brien (2),Denis Morgan, Alan Cassidy, Gary Cassidy among the goals. Mike Tim’s appearance in the competition has taken Morgan’s from contenders to favourites, as they look to be strong in every department now. Steven O’Brien has moved to the top of the scorer’s charts with 4. Paudie Granville and the Desperados deserve credit though, last night wasn’t their best showing but they have been a hard team to beat in their other games, Paudie is a first-time manager and will learn from the experience. Teams like this are what keeps the sevens going.
In game 2, Kelmac and the Village Inn gave us a super game in the Kilgarvan Derby. Kelmac wouldn’t have been favourites for this game, but took the lead early through Mike P O’Sullivan. The Village Inn dominated the rest of the game, but Kelmac played a very clever 20 minutes, and Colm Kelleher and Con Godfrey were at the heart of a few good break-aways. Glen Egan’s fitness started to show, and with the two Harringtons up front the Village Inn peppered the Kelmac goals, where Peter Moran was equal to at least 5 good shots. With two minutes to go though, Patrick Scannell worked a clever pass to Ian Healy-Rae, and the skipper placed a lovely shot into the top corner. One-all at the final whistle, and a very high standard of game. Both teams deserve credit for the way they played, at times they knocked lumps out of each other, referee Gert Kruis kept the game flowing and there wasn’t a single word of dissent. More teams could learn from this.
Game 3 was a tight affair with a John D O’Sullivan rocket from “downtown” getting the win for Sneem Santos. Before that it had looked like a 0-0 draw, as both Sneem and the Stonebusters are very solid at the back. Jimmy O’Brien is still looking for a bit of goal-scoring form, but it would take a brave man to bet against him getting a few before Sneem are finished. Junior O’Sullivan was good in goals for the Stonebusters, and Mike O’Neill was on the ball a lot for Sneem in this one.
In Game 4, NAMA (traditionalists will know them as Murnanes and Dalys) showed really good form to see off Team Actimel on a 3-0 scoreline. John Daly got the first with a rare header that he put away really well. Michael “Flash” O’Sullivan scored two more in the second half for NAMA, who used the ball well and really stretched Team Actimel across the pitch. NAMA have now got a mixed line of form, with a 3-0 win and a 0-3 loss, so it will be interesting to see what they can come up with on Friday night against the Stonebusters.
Game 5 saw Blackwater Tavern getting past the Trappatonis 2-1. Trappatonis took the lead when Padraig O’Sullivan (former top scorer in the competition) robbed the goalie and finished cleverly. It is very hard to beat youth though, and the young Tavern team ran the show in the second half. Timmy Clifford is a wily old campaigner, and he re-organised the team at half time, giving them license to attack, with overlaps appearing all over the place. The average age of the Trappatonis is in the mid-30s, with jeans sizes to match, and they couldn’t hang on for a draw after Kieran O’Neill scored the equaliser, with Martin Reilly side footing home the winner from a corner. A mention must go to the good sportsmanship of the Trappatonis managers Tommy Granville and Paul O’Connor who agreed to re-schedule the game to facilitate a football match at short notice, even though they knew it would weaken their team.
