Thurs July 23rd

Report on the over-35 game v Castlegregory on Wednesday 22nd July at 7.30 in Mounthawk Park

Both teams started slowly until PJ Reidy got a super strike to make it 1-0 to Inter.  Castlegregory just equalised before half time and at the resumption of the second half, Castlegregory went 2-1 up.  Inter were dealt a blow when Mike Donovan went down injured.  Nobody knows what happened, but there is going to be an enquiry into it headed by Declan O'Neill!!!!  Inter started to get to grips with the game and had several chances to equalise and finally did with another wonder strike from PJ Reidy who is now looking for his first hat trick for Inter.  Jim O'Shea made it 3-2 from a wonderful pass from Mike Hussey and Hussey himself made it 4-2 with a strike from 25 yards.  Coolness personified, Paul Cassidy, made it 5-2 with a strike which was a carbon copy of the goal he got last Sunday.

All in all, it was a good performance by Inter with O'Connor solid at the back; Reidy and Cassidy pulling the strings from mid-field; Jason Taylor covered every inch of turf; Jim O'Shea got stuck into every tackle; and Mike Hussey who passed the half way line for the first time in his career.  Donovan used all of his years of experience until injured, and the boy wonder from Kilgarvan Declan O'Neill, with his shiny boots, battled all day.  Rob Morris was solid in goals throughout.

Manager, Jimmy The Runner, stated in his press interview after that it was a good performance, but much has to be improved for the semi-final in a couple of weeks.

Celsius Cup Quarter Final

Inter Kenmare B 6 – 6 Park B

Inter Kenmare B hosted Park B in the quarter final of the Celsius Menswear Cup, and it turned out to be an amazing game. This was the highest-scoring game we have ever seen at Inter Kenmare Park, ending in a 6-all draw, even without extra time.

Paul Cassidy has been playing for Inter for 25 years, and in all that time he hasn’t seen a game with 12 goals, so that says it all really.

Inter started in flying form and were 1-0 up after the first attack, with Jason Taylor finishing from an acute angle on the left. On the next attack, Joseph Sheehan sent in a big cross from the right, Taylor headed back across goals, and Matt Zoeller finished. 2-0.

Things got even better for Inter, when Connie Cremin smashed in a volley from all of 35 yards, and then after a great move on the left, Rob Hodnett crossed for Zoeller to get his second, with a good header. 4-0.

At this stage, the Park woke up, and moved their best player, no. 9, back to centre back, which helped them steady up, and they started to attack. Between the 35th and 40th minute they bagged two goals, one a jammy enough effort off Phillip Duggan’s knee and one good finish after a passing move. However Inter got one more before half time, Eoin Finnegan putting Matt Zoeller in for his hat trick, just before half time.

Straight from the kick off, Inter’s right back (sorry Joe) got caught in possession and this left the Park in to make it 5-3.An from the next kick off, they got in again, making the score 5-4. Inter were in trouble at this stage, and the Park were well on top, especially after Matt Zoeller had to go off. From a speculative lob from the right wing, the flight of the ball fooled everyone, and ended up in the back of the net. This made the score 5-5, with ten minutes left. Then Eoin Finnegan forced a corner, and from his cross, Ron Twomey scored with a left-footed bicycle kick (it was that sort of day) to make it 6-5.

The Park got up the field, and their no. 9, who had been moved back up the field, got a head to it to make it 6-6. And they nearly scored the winner, after the ball broke off Gary Cassidy in Inter’s goal their striker managed to miss an open goal from 6 yards.

This was an amazing game from start to finish, there were no yellow cards, and it was played in a good spirit from start to finish. At the final whistle it was hard to know who was more pleased, but I suppose Inter have to be disappointed. At least we’ve made it into the record books – we need to check with the league to see if there was ever a higher-scoring game. Hopefully a few of the seven a side games will provide as much entertainment as this one.

Youths Cup Final

Our youths team have made the cup final for the third time in the club’s history this year. They have beaten Ballybunion (who beat the Park), and a very highly rated Listowel team in a replay on the way to the final. The Listowel replay was possibly the best performance of the year, as our lads came from 2-0 down at half time, with storming performances from Tim Crowley, Mike Hallissey and Steven O’Shea, and Goals by Steven, Sean Sheehan and James Duncan (in injury time) to beat a Listowel side containing two Irish Internationals. The game will have been played (its on Friday 19th at 7.30 in Tralee) by the time you read this, and we’ll have the match report in the next issue.

In the meantime, does anyone remember the last time the club got to a youths cup final? It was in 2003, and the team, managed by Mark Granville, lost to Lisselton in Tralee. Cian Crowley scored for Inter, but Lisselton came out on top. As far as we can determine, the squad was:

Anthony Sheehan, Alan Cassidy, Patrick O’Dywer, Rob Hodnett ,Shane O’Connor, Gerard Farrell, Hayden West, Cian Crowley, Sean O’Leary, Donal O’Connor, Matt Zoeller, Mike Tim O’Sullivan, Gearoid O’Connor, Gearoid O’Brien, Aidan O’Donoghue, Paul O’Connor.

If we’ve missed anyone let us know, but be prepared to be signed up for next season!!

Inter Kenmare 7-a-Side

The Inter Kenmare 7-a-Side competition is almost here. Some important dates to remember are:

July 6th – Teams need to be in.

July 13th – First Game.

As usual, there are Men’s and Women’s competitions this year. We have started our advertising campaign early this year, and are using text, email, facebook, signs and posters. Please do your best to either put in a team or play in one – this is great fun and with our website and advertising plans for this year is also a great way to promote your business as well as giving employees and customers a at least four games of soccer. If your team isn’t with a business and don’t have a sponsor, the entry fees are low enough to make it no problem to enter, and there are competition levels to suit everybody. Last year’s winners – O’mahony Engineering, DSL Coastal and Kelmac Kitchens will tell you that this competition is well worth entering and great fun.

We hope to improve on last year’s crowds as well, so look out on our website, the Coachmans and on the town notice boards for fixture lists and times.

To enter, pick up a form from the Coachmans, go to www.interkenmare.com or talk to any committee member.

Under 11 Boys Cup Final

Unfortunately, our under 11s lost out in their under 11 Cup Final against Killarney Celtic. Caroline Taylor’s team lost out 3-0, but were unlucky to lose by such a big score. Killarney were the better team on the night, but are used to playing in finals, and had already won the league for the year. Dara O’Siochriu, Eric Riney, Steven O’Sullivan and Pat Spillane played well for our team, but couldn’t do enough on the night. The Under 11’s have gone from strength to strength this year, Caroline has put in loads of hard work, and was assisted by Steven O’Shea and Matt Zoeller. The fact that we had an u11 B team this year as well was a great help, and means that the future for the club is secure.

Senior A Season Over

Our newly-promoted senior A team got back to business in the Castle Bar League cup once the promotion celebrations were finished, and beat Listowel comprehensively at home. Sean Murphy (penalty), Sean O’Leary with a goal of the season candidate, including a backheel, beating three players and then lobbing the ‘keeper and a Dan Cahalane piledriver saw Listowel beaten easily.  However they lost the next round to Spa Road away from home, on a 2-1 scoreline, with Derdy O’Sullivan-Casey scoring for Inter. This brings a superb season to a close, with promotion to Premier A status next year. The “big guns” will be coming to Kenmare from next August onwards, and the good performances of Tralee Dynamos and Lisselton in national competitions shows the level we’ll need to be at next year. Having said that, if the approach the players and management took to this year can be repeated and improved upon next year we won’t have too many problems.

B team Update

Our B team are still playing on in the Celsius Menswear cup, and have beated Killarney Athletic (2-1) with goals from Steven O’Shea and Robert Hodnett. In the next round, they drew with Ballymac Galaxy, and we’ll have an update on the replay in the next issue.

U11 Girls

Lisa O’Shea’s under 11 girls had a great season, and had a chance to beat Listowel to take the Kerry League to a playoff. On the night, a huge crowd saw Inter draw 1-1 with Listowel, in a really good game Joanne O’Sullivan scored for Inter, who had Listowel on the “rack” right to the end. Lisa O’Shea deserves great credit for this team, and she will have a hard time picking a player of the year in August.

Ever Think of Coaching Soccer?

The time has come to wind up the underage season and think about setting coaches in place for next year. The vast majority of our coaches are staying on for next year, but we are always on the lookout for extra coaches and managers. This year, we sent a number of people on FAI coaching courses, including Kick Start 1 and 2, Senior Introduction and Youth Cert. We now have two qualified youth cert coaches (John Holland and Matt Zoeller). This is a great standard, as it qualifies the coach to train a youth team at a professional club. The two lads will be using their skills to help out all our other coaches next year.

You don’t need a huge amount of skill to start coaching an underage team – we will provide help an training, and start you off as an assistant coach if you want. Generally one training session and one game every two weeks from September to May is what’s involved, and it’s a great way to get outside in the winter months, enjoy yourself and maybe work on your own fitness into the bargain. Many parents attend most of the games anyway, so why not sign up as a coach?

Also, our new clubhouse is due to open for next season, so training is no longer going to be the “hardship” post it was in the past. If you’re interested, give club secretary Charlie Vaughan a shout on 086-8188858.

Inter Kenmare F.C. News 2008-2009 Season

Inter Kenmare Seniors Promoted

It's official, Inter Kenmare's A team have secured promotion to Kerry District League Premier A.

At the start of the season, Inter were re-graded to Premier B, without being relegated, or having to make a submission to the league. Given that the Premier A division contained some teams with no B Team, no ground, no  under-age teams and none of the history of Inter, this seemed strange. However the club took this on the chin, and decided that the best place for talking was on the pitch.

The season started with some early setbacks, but the A squad put a fantastic run together from October to April, and have now wrapped up second place.

The Premier B title was decided in a Final versus Killorglin, in Mounthawk Park, Tralee on may 10th.  Reports from local press:

“Inter Kenmare tried hard but were slow into their stride as Killorglin dominated the opening quarter but once they settled they played some nice football with winger Stephen O’Shea looking dangerous but overall they did not have the finishing power that Killorglin possessed.

Both sides will be promoted to Premier A next season and they should more than acquit themselves with Killorglin definitely looking like a team who could well worry some of the big names.

Killorglin took over in the second half despite some good work by Alan Cassidy, Stephen O’Shea, Shane O’Connor, Philip Duggan and veteran PJ Reidy who is still competing at senior level in the twilight of his playing days.”

On the day, it must be agreed that the better team won. But the Inter A Team have done themselves proud this year, and will be competing at the highest level next year, which is where the club wants to be. The club would also like to thank the huge crowd who travelled over from Kenmare for the game.

Inter Kenmare v Killorglin, May 10th 2009

Under 15 Girls Lose Out

Inter’s Under 15 girls lost out in the cup final to a very impressive Listowel side. Listowel have been setting the standards in Kerry for the last few years in girls’ soccer, but Kim Kennedy’s team have been able to get the better of them on the odd occasion, so we had big hopes for Thursday night. However, Inter were down a couple of players due to injury, and Listowel got the perfect start with two quick goals. Listowel ran out easy winners, but Inter to their credit, kept trying to the very end. Aishling Harrington, making her first start in goals as Michelle O’Connor was injured, had a good game, and Ger Cahalane, Kristen O’Brien and Rachel Hawker all stood out. Even though Inter lost the game, the team can be proud of their efforts in getting to the final, and trying their best on the night.

Dressing Rooms Update

Our dressing room development is going to plan, and great progress can be seen up at the pitch. Work is going very well, and the building is taking shape at a fast pace. We are definitely on track with our to have them open for next season, and will be trying to even beat that deadline.

New Arrival

On behalf of the club we would like to congratulate Gearoid O’Brien and Carol Mullan on the birth of baby Tristan.

Under 14s league Champions!!!!!

On Saturday May 2nd, Inter Kenmare's Under 14 team won the Kerry Division 1 League in the best possible style, with an emphatic home win over their challengers for the title, St./ Brendan's Park. The win over one of Kerry's Marquee teams meant that Inter won the league by a single point.

This is a brilliant result for the team, who really deserved the wion after a good performance today, and a dedicated and hard season.

The game was won 5-0, and was in the bag after 16 minutes after Brian Clifford stunned the large crowd by completing a hat-trick. Brian was un-markable for the start of this game, and Brian Crowley and Colm O'Sullivan kept moving the ball up to him. The Park were understandably rocked, and when their centre-half got sent off for "rough play" on, you guessed it, Brian Clifford, Inter were safe. Broan Crowley got a fourth goal, and Colm O'Sullivan got the best goal of the day, beating 6 players and slotting home to finish off in style. Unfair to single any of these players out on the day, they all have the capability to go on and become major players for the club's senior teams.

We're waiting for Jim Kennedy's report on the game, but would like to give an un-biased appraisal of Jim's work with this team - he has coached them since under 11, and it shows. The football style was class, not a long ball in sight. Almost as good as Arsenal. The defence was well-organised and well coached. The discipline of this team is great, and has been in every game. Jim has laid down the law to these fellas on discipline, and is an example to all the other coaches in the club. Park tried to rattle them with abuse and tackles today, and got nowhere. Finally, these fellas play for each other, and really enjoy themselves. For example, John Hayes was unable to play in goals due to a broken hand, and he was as much a part of the final occasion as anyone. Shane O'Sullivan also proved himself to be a great team man, he was unlucky not to start, but came on and worked as hard as anyone. They didn't pick this kind of team spirit "off the ground" so Jim should take a bow. If any members read this, please pass on your congratulations to Jim.

The season started with some early setbacks, but the A squad put a fantastic run together from October to April, and have now wrapped up second place.

The Premier B title will be decided in a Final versus Killorglin, in Mounthawk Park, Tralee.

We have a prospective date for this game as May 10th, at 2.30 pm. Confirmation will be in the Kingdom Newspaper on Tuesday and the Kerryman on Wednesday.

This is the biggest game the club has had since the last cup final in 2003. In fact this is the first chance for league silverware since the early 90's. So the message is clear - this is a huge game, and members need to mobilise and support their team. The club will be running a bus on the day, and trying to take as many members as possible to the game. The seniors have supported the other teams where possible all year - we need to pay them back now.

For any info on buses or times, contact charlie.vaughan@bt.com or 086-8188858.

Under 15 Girls - 27th April 2009

The Under 15 Girls League is all wrapped up for this season with Inter Kenmare confirmed in second place following this win over Killarney Celtic. Before this game Listowel Celtic were crowned champions and Killarney had to win to force a play-off for second. However goals from Katie O’Shea and Siobhan Kennedy gave Inter the points and the runners-up spot.

Senior Division 1B

Inter Kenmare 0-0 Mastergeeha

Second in the table Mastergeeha came to Kenmare on Sunday with big hopes of collecting three points. Mastergeeha have been going well in the league and cups this year, and before Sunday were four points the leaders with a number of games in hand. They started well, with strong play down the right. Inter spotted this though, and Robert Hodnett started tracking back on the left to help out left-back Michael O-Connor, who was making a comeback after a long absence due to injury. The two lads quickly got on top on their wing and Inter got control of the game. Jason Taylor had a half-chance, and Seamus Cremin had a shot blocked on the line. The visitors should have scored from a corner just before half time, but Seamus Cremin returned the favour with a great block on the line. Inter defended very well in the second half, with Joe Sheehan, Ron Twomey, Charlie Vaughan and Michael O’Connor well helped by Connie Cremin. ‘Geeha never really got in, and Inter managed to get a couple of chances with sub Sean Schmidt winning a number of free kicks towards the end. Overall, a good result for Inter.

Sunday March 22nd

Premier B

Inter Kenmare 0-3 Killorglin

This top of the table clash was the game of the day in Kerry, but didn’t go our way. The first half was even, and finished 0-0. Inter could possibly have scored, Sean Murphy who showed up well nearly scored with an acrobatic overhead kick that just went wide. In the second half, Killorglin proved what a good side they are, and one of their strikers kept coming deep and hitting long passes to their no. 9, who had pace to burn, and got in for 2 quick goals. Inter went all out in attack, and Killorglin got a third in injury time. 3-0 was possibly a little unrealistic, as was the 4-0 win Inter had in Killorglin earlier this year. Hopefully Inter will get the chance to get one back later in the year.

There were a few bright points from the game also, Steven O’Shea was in great form, and Phillip Duggan and ‘keeper Gary Cassidy were good on the day.

Immediately after this game, our neighbours Sneem had a great win over QPR, 5-3. QPR then lost their next game as well, meaning Inter are back in control of the all-important second place in the league. There’s a huge game v Lenaghmore in Kenmare on Easter Sunday which will have a big say in the destination of second place, promotion and the league final spot this year. The team needs your support now, so watch out on http://www.interkenmare.com/ for fixtures and get behind the team.

Wednesday March 18th

Division 1B

Connolly Park 1-2 Inter Kenmare

Inter got a great win on the road in Tralee, even with a few lads showing the effects of St.Patricks day. Connolly Park scored a great volleyed goal before half time, to go 1-0 up. They were strong favourites at this stage, but right from the kick off after the half, Connie Cremin played a 40-yard pass behind the back four and Jason Taylor buried the half volley. Twenty minutes later, Inter went 2-1 up, with Brian Casey scoring the goal with a brilliant first-time volley from a corner. Inter held out very well for the rest of the game, the three O’Sullivan-Caseys (Donal, Dermot and Brian) were very good, as was Connie Cremin, Robert Hodnett and Ronan Twomey who did a good job in goals on a very windy night.

New Arrival

Congratulations to club stalwart Donal O’Sullivan-Casey and his partner Sue on the birth of Aidan, who was born on Tuesday morning. Mother and baby are doing well, as is the proud new Dad.

Coffee Morning

Inter are running a coffee morning on Friday April 17th in the Lansdowne Hotel. This is usually a great event, Inter’s catering team usually put up a great show and this is highly recommended. A couple of interesting prize categories will be announced for parents on the morning so be sure to call in from 10 onwards to meet some of the coaches of our underage teams, see some photos from the year so far, and enjoy a coffee and a snack while you’re there!

The Underage teams have been busy of late, and all of them are putting in a very strong finish to the season. There are a number of short match reports below, and here’s the overview of each team at the moment:

U11 Boys A – Moving up the league, more than holding their own against the very top teams in Kerry.

U11 Boys B – Still celebrating their thrilling 4-2 win in the cup against the mighty Kilalrney Celtic

U11 Girls – Unlucky to lose on penalties in the cup in probably the most exciting cup game we’ve had this year.

U 12 Boys – Progressing well at this stage of the season, U12 is a main indiciator of strength of underage, and our boys are doing us proud. Their coach is studying for his FAI Youth Cert at the moment and it shows in the team.

U13 Boys – Unbeaten since ’08 in the league. One of the major hopes for honours this year.

U13 Girls – Getting ready for a tough trip to Listowel who would be seen as the only major obstacle between them and cup success this year

U14 Boys – Waiting for the Park to come to Kenmare in a “winner takes all” league clash. If you only watch one underage game in the next month, make it this one.

U15 Boys – Unlucky to lose to Athletic last week, working hard though.

U15 Girls – Gutted after a 4-3 late loss to Mastergeeha this week, focusing on the cup now.

U16 Boys – Delighted with a 2-1 win over Castleisland, going very well.

Youths – Down to the last four in Kerry in the Cup. Not every player gets to the last four in Kerry in top class competition at the u18 age group – this is a good team who maybe don’t get the credit they deserve.

Saturday 28th March

Under 14 Cup: Inter Kenmare, who are the top team in division one, defeated Fenit 6-0 to advance to the second round. The ‘Life of Brian’ could be the theme of the day with Brian Crowley and Brian Clifford netting two each. Gavin Crowley and Colm O’Sullivan got the others.

Wed 25th March

U15 Girls

Mastergeeha 4-3 Inter Kenmare

Inter were desperately unlucky to lost this one. Mastergeeha went 3-0 up in a first half to forget, but Inter caught fire after half time. Siobhan Kennedy forced a goal, and Rachel Hawker took over, getting two more. But with minutes to go, Mastergeeha scored the winner.

Sat 15th March

U11 Cup

Inter B 4-2 Killarney Celtic

Inter with classic goals in this one from Sean Casey, Jordan Whyte (2) and Thomas Gudgeon, got a great win in front of a big crowd. This was a performance to be proud of, and some of the hard work and unselfish passing by all the players was great to see.

Summer Soccer Schools

The annual FAI summer soccer camp will be in Kenmare between August 17th and 21st. Booking is now open for this – to book, go to http://www.interkenmare.com/ and click on the Summer Soccer Schools Logo.

Sat Feb 21st.

Inter Kenmare FC are Ladies Champions of Kerry.

On a great occasion on the 21st of February under lights in Mounthawk Park, Inter got the better of the home team on a 2-0 scoreline.

The game was a very entertaining affair with plenty of hard work and Endeavour by both sides as well as an abundance football skills being exhibited. Mounthawk opened the brighter and showed a lot of creativity in the midfield area. However, once Inter got into top gear they always looked the more cohesive side and created a lot of scoring opportunities.

After just three minutes Laura O Sullivan opened the Mounthawk defence with a scintillating run that produced a corner. It was delivered into the box by Roisin Boyle, but Gina Crowley's shot was wide of the target. Shortly afterwards the Mounthawk keeper Jean McMahon made a superb save from a Lisa O'Shea shot after she was set up by Majella O'Sullivan.

However, just four minutes before the break Inter's relentless attacking paid off when Lisa O'Shea won the ball on the wing and threaded it through to Michelle O'Sullivan. She put Roisin Boyle in and she gave the keeper no chance from close range. Mounthawk showed much more urgency in their play in the second half and began to ask serious questions of the Inter defence. When Rachel Tough was fouled Sarah Carey took the free from 30 yards and the powerful shot was just a whisker away. Minutes later she went close again from a set piece but her free kick was well saved by Inter keeper Nora May O'Brien.

Ten minutes from the end Inter sealed the game with the industrious Lisa O'Shea finding space on the right wing to put Roisin Boyle free outside the box and with the Mounthawk goalie off her line the Inter striker showed great composure to drill a powerful low shot which went all the way to the net. There was no way back now for a brave Mounthawk side as Inter slowed down the pace of the game and ran out very comfortable winners at the end in a fine sporting game that was a good advertisement for ladies soccer in the county.

It was a very good team performance by the winners with Caroline Taylor and Elaine O'Neill rock solid at the back Lisa O'Shea and Laura O'Sullivan outstanding in the middle of the park while their two strikers Michelle O'Sullivan and lethal finisher Roisin Boyle giving the Mounthawk defence a torrid time.

Majella O'Sullivan and Gina Crowley put in a great night's work as well, battling for every ball in some really tough midfield exchanges and always coming out on top.

This is a brilliant reward for a great year's work, and all the players should be heavily congratulated. We must mention the huge Kenmare support that traveled to Tralee and made this game seem like a home fixture for Inter. This one will be celebrated for some time to come....

Sun Feb 15th Senior Premier B

Inter Kenmare 0-0 QPR

Inter played host to QPR in Kenmare, in a game that finished in a 0-0 draw. With both teams right at the top of the table, and QPR having won the reverse fixture, this was a tight game. Inter had the best of it though, and when the whistle went at the end, felt like this was two points dropped. Best for Inter were Shane O’Connor, Phillip Duggan and Shane Dalton. Steven O’Shea made a big difference when he came on, but top scorer Matt Zoeller was missed for this one.

Sun Feb 22nd Senior Premier B

Spa Road 0 -1 Inter Kenmare

At the end of the season, this could be a vital three points. Spa Road beat Inter heavily in Kenmare in the second game of this season, and are a tough team to beat at home. Inter laid siege to the Spa Road goal, but their ‘keeper and back four had great games. However Steven O’Shea got through with three minutes to go to seal the three points. This was Steven’s first goal in a while, and it has been coming with a while as he is re-discovering his form from last season. This puts Inter back on top of the table.

Sun Feb 29th Senior Premier B

Castlegregory 2-2 Inter Kenmare

Another away trip, against another team from the top 4. Inter, Castegregory, Killorglin and QPR are within three points at the top of the league, and Lenaghmore are coming up behind. So at this stage, every game is like a cup final. Castlegregory were at home for this one, and put in a big effort on the day. They took a 1-0 lead, only for Matt Zoeller to equalize before half time. The second half was a copy of the first, with some good pressure by the Castlegregory strikers to force a bad clearance, and get through for the lead goal. But Zoeller struck again, and earned a valuable point on the road for Inter.

Kenmare Sisters Doing it for Themselves

On Saturday Feb 28th, the hugely successful Soccer Sisters Program came to an end in Kenmare. Taking place in the PobailScoil Inbhear Sceine Gym, and run by Kim Kennedy, Caroline Taylor, Michelle O’Sullivan, Siobhan Kennedy and some really helpful parents this was a program run over a number of weeks to help with developing skills for Inter’s girls. This was run in conjunction with the FAI, and all ages from u11 to u14 took part. A high level of coaching and lots of fun games ensured this was really enjoyable for all. And a number of players really stood up, and from what we hear some of them could be hearing from the FAI again if they keep playing at this level!

Congratulations to all the organizers, it is no surprise given they way they run events that Inter was awarded Girls Underage Club of the year for 2008.

And the Oscar Goes To:

Inter have decided to revamp the idea of an annual social, and have decided on an Awards Night in the Coachmans on March 27th. This is based on the FAI and FA Awards nights, with players voting on Player of the Year, as well as Club Player of the year awards. Entrance on the night will be very reasonably priced, and tickets to cover the cost of refreshments will be available at the door. Mark the date in your diary, all the Inter Events so far this year have been very successful and enjoyable, and we intend to continue this with the Awards Night.

Youths Update

Given the large coverage we have given to the underage teams this year in these pages, we have focused on adult teams over the last two editions. However we will increase the focus on the underage teams again in the next issue, and would ask coaches to remember to send in their match reports. Some highlights from the last month:

Under 13’s beating all around them in the league under the guidance of Craig Van Der Venter.

Under 14s eagerly awaiting the visit of the Park for a Kerry League decider.

Under 15 girls currently attending Kerry trials and showing up very well – look out for more news.

Under 11, 13 and 15 girls doing well in their leagues, great things are expected of especially the under 15s this year.

Greyhound Bar Cup

Ballybunion 1 – 2 Inter Kenmare

In the second round of the cup, Inter made the long road to Ballybunion, to take on the locals on one of the most unusual pitches in Kerry, with power lines running directly above the goal, necessitating pauses in play due to the ball hitting the lines.

Inter were obviously sluggish from the long trip, and found themselves one-nil down quickly. However they recovered, and Matt Zoeller scored a good goal after a long buildup. Half-time 1-1. Inter bossed the second half, and had a number of good chances. Inter started to press hard on the wings, and Marcin Urbisch was very prominent on the right hand side. The breakthrough came with 15 minutes to go, where the veteran PJ Reidy, who has made more comebacks than Mick Galway did for Ireland, played a sharp through ball. Connie Cremin dummied and allowed the ball to run through to Alan Cassidy, who was chopped down for a penalty.

Matt Zoeller was quickest to the ball, and banged home his penalty for his 15th goal of the season. 8 wins on the trot now for the seniors.

Division 1B

Castleisland 2 – 1 Inter Kenmare

Inter’s B team also played on Sunday the 8th, meaning Inter had 28 different players on duty for the day.  Manager Jason Taylor changed the team around, and went for a 5-man midfield. This worked well, with Eoin Finnegan and Sean O’Leary pulling the strings in midfield. Seamus Cremin crossed to Taylor after 5 minutes for a goal, but this was ruled out due to offside. 5 minutes later Patrick Cremin crossed to Taylor, whose header hit the base of the post. And after 20 minutes, Sean O’Leary played Robert Hodnett in one on one, and he finished brilliantly for the lead goal.

In the second half Inter were comfortable, and the back four were dealing well with everything that came in. However, an unfortunate own goal by Gearoid O’Connor. And the team was still in shock when with Castleisland headed the winner with a minute to go.

Ladies League

Inter Kenmare 7-0 Abbeydorney

Inter's ladies continue on their unstoppable run. The team is training regularly, and it really showed. The opposition here was poor, but the passing, organisation and know-how of the Kenmare team was really streets ahead. The game was only 5 minutes old when Michelle Casey was played in by Laura O'Sullivan for a first goal. Three minutes later, Laura's shot was handled in the box for a penalty. Michelle Casey took it, and buried it. And then the floodgates opened, with Michelle getting three more goals before half time, and Roisin Boyle grabbed another one, with a neat finish high into the net. This made it 6-0 at half time, with Michelle Casey getting 5 goals in a half. This must be a league record.

Abbeydorney upped their game in the second half, and made a game of it to their credit. They couldn't score though, and Inter got one, which was the best of the lot, a 25-yarder from Roisin Boyle.

Very hard to single out a player here, Michelle and Roisin got a bagful of goals, but they were helped by the whole team - every Inter player was better than their opponents on the day.

This result leaves Inter two points clear at the top of the table, with equal games played, with two games to go. Keep watching this space for more updates!!

Division 1B

Inter B 0 -0 Killarney Athletic.

The club's draw specialists, the B team, played out an entertaining 0-0 draw with Killarney Athletic on Sunday. Inter had all the play in the first half, and Alan Cassidy on the left wing cut through several times, first to send Jason taylor through against the keeper, and a second time to put himself through. Sadly on both occasions the finishing didn't match the build-up play.

As is often the case, Killarney came into it in the second half, and Inter had Gary Cassidy to thank, especially for a flying save to stop a shot destined for the top corner.

Best for Inter were Robin Clifford, 'keeper Cassidy, Donal O'Connor and Joseph Sheehan.

Greyhound Bar Cup

Inter A 2-0 Iveragh United

Report Compiled by Ruairi Nolan (Iveragh)

Premier B  high  flyers  Inter  Kenmare  progressed  safely  through  to  the  third  round  of  The  Greyhound  Bar  Cup,  by  narrowly  defeating  division  2  surprise  package;  Iveragh  Utd.,  in  a  close  encounter  on  a  cool,  crisp  afternoon  in  Kenmare.  Both  sides  struggled  to  adapt  to  the  tough  conditions,  due  to  heavy  rainfall  in  the  days  prior  to  this  encounter,  but  Inter  exhibited  a  fine  display  of  graft  and  teamwork  which  eventually  saw  them  to  victory.

Both  sides  started  brightly,  but  it  was  Inter  who  gained  advantage  during  the  opening  exchanges,  with  the  industrious  striker  Matt  Zoeller  having  a  glorious  one  on  one  opportunity  well  saved  by  reliable  Iveragh  keeper;  Cormac  O’Shea.  This  was  the  wake  up  call  Iveragh  needed,  who  then  came  into  the  game  a  lot  more.  Striker  Cian  McCrohan  and  winger  Darren  Corcoran  worked  tirelessly  in  an  effort  to  tip  the  balance  in  Iveragh’s  favour,  and  this  very  nearly  came  to  fruition  when  Darren  Corcoran  saw  his  goal  bound  effort  brilliantly  blocked  by   diligent  defender;  Shane  Dalton.  Also,  shouts  for  a  penalty  when  Cian  McCrohan  was  bundled  over  the  box  were  waved  away  by  the  referee,  much  to  the  annoyance  of  the  South  Kerry  men.

But  it  was  Inter  who  broke  the  deadlock  when  midfielder  Dan  Cahalan  popped  up  to  finish  off  a  great  move  by  the  men  from  Kenmare.  This  was  quickly  followed  by  a  great  chance  to  compound  their  dominance,  but  Sean  Murphy  could  only  watch  as   he  saw  his  shot  sail  agonizingly  over  the  bar.  Iveragh  were  down  but  not out  and  emphasized their  fighting  spirit  by  coming  back  yet  again  at  Inter.  Back  Liam  O’Sullivan  illustrated  his  attacking  prowess  by  getting  forward  to  test  the  keeper  sternly  on  not  one  but  two  occasions.

However,  Inter  struck  a  telling  blow  just  on  the  stroke  of  half  time  by  punishing  Iveragh  for  their  some  sloppy  defending,  when  Stephen  O’Shea  nipped  in  to  calmly  slot  home  past  the  helpless  Cormac  O’Shea.  Iveragh  now  had  a  mountain  to  climb,  with  Inter  now  with  a  vice  like  grip  on  the  game

Be  that  as  it  may,   it  was  Iveragh,  without  influential  topscorer  Stevie  Boyle  and   powerful  winger  Callum  Smith,  who  started  the  second  half  the  brighter  and  peppered  the  Inter  goal  with  corner  after  corner,  but  they  were  unable  to  penetrate  the  robust  Inter  defence.  Declan``Fox``  O’Sullivan  came  close  but  his  blistering  effort was  well  held  by  the  collected  Inter  keeper;  Gary  Cassidy.

Iveragh’s  frustration  was  intensified,  when  they  had  a  goal  disallowed  from  a  corner  as  the  referee  had  judged  the  ball  to  have  gone  out  of  play  first.

With  a  two  goal  cushion  Inter  were  able  to  sit  back,  soak  up  the  pressure  and   cunningly catch  Iveragh   on  the  break.  Iveragh  did  try  to  inject  their  war  weary team  with  some  life  by  bringing  on  pacy  subs;  Pa  O’Mahony  and  brothers  Ruairi  and  Diarmuid  Nolan,  but  it  was  Inter  who  finished  the  game  the  stronger,  with  sub  Paul  Cassidy  coming  close,  and  it  was  readily  apparent  that  they  were  going  to  progress  safely  through  to  the  next  round.

Reserve Cup

Inter Kenmare 0-4 Castleisland

Inter's B Team's fine run came to an abrupt end against a Castleisland team that came with a lot of new faces on the day. Could it be a co-incidence that their A team's game that morning was cancelled?

Under-14s go top

Inter under14s have gone top of Division 1 as the season reaches it’s climax..

After three wins and a draw Inter travelled to Fenit. Never an easy place to go at the best of times Inter’s task was made even more difficult by the torrential rain and gale force winds.

Both teams struggled from the off and the game was very scrappy. Neither side could fashion any sort of goal chance and the ball spent more time off the pitch than on it. But Inter battled away, with Gavin Crowley, Colm O’Sullivan and Finbar Quill to the fore. Half way through the first half Inter fashioned their first chance. A fine ball across the box from Brian Clifford found his strike partner and Brian Crowley fired home the first goal from close range. This seemed to settle Inter and an almost identical chance fell again to Brian Crowley who saw his effort clear the bar. Shortly after Brian Clifford looked to have added the second but his fine turn and shot was ruled out by the referee who spotted some ‘leaning in’ on the defender. All was looking well for Inter until shortly before half time. Fenit fired home a fine free kick from the edge of the box to wrong foot John Hayes and send the sides in level.

After the break Inter continued where they had left off, dominating the game. Brian Crowley had a couple of one on ones with the keeper but couldn’t find the finish. However, Brian Clifford did find the corner of the net after 10 minutes of the second half with a fine shot to make it 2-1. Inter continued to fashion the best chances but just couldn’t find the finish. And only a superb save from John Hayes, who flung himself across the goal to palm away a fine shot kept Inter in front. But with ten minutes left substitute Shane O’Sullivan stepped inside the defender and hit the corner of the net from the edge of the area. A fine 3-1 win for Inter in appalling conditions.

Last Saturday we were away again, this time our travels took us to Ballyhar. It was a fine morning and the pitch was in great condition, especially considering the weather we’ve had recently.

Inter were missing some of our stalwarts, Brian & Gavin Crowley, Cian Long and Dean Cassidy through illness. This meant a start for Ryan Van Deventer and Johnnie Breen from the under 13’s. On the day we also had to ask Fintan Kennedy from the under 12s to play again to make up our starting eleven.

Playing into the wind in the first half Inter start slowly once again. Whilst Ballyhar enjoyed a lot of possession the Inter back four of Ryan Van Deventer, Jordan O’Connor, James De Silva and Daniel Murnane ensured John Hayes in goal didn’t have a save to make. Indeed Inter looked the more likely to make a breakthrough. Brian Clifford and Fintan Kennedy were linking well with target man Shane O’Sullivan and both Shane and Brian went close on a number of occasions. But it was to stay scoreless by half time

The second half was all Kenmare. With the midfield of Finbar Quill (playing despite his cold) Colm O’Sullivan and a rejuvenated Johnnie Breen Inter dominated proceedings. So, it was not a surprise when five minutes into the second half Brian Clifford turned at the edge of the box and fired Kenmare in front. More goals looked likely and man of the match Johnnie Breen added a second before Brian Clifford added the third to give Inter a fine 3-0 win. Especially pleasing was that we kept a clean sheet for only the second time this season.

So, with two games left Inter top Division 1. Home victories over Dingle and Park would ensure Inter a title win.

Monday 29th December

Inter's Senior A Team are top of Premier 1B, two points ahead of the next placed tem, who do have a game in hand. A look through the available records shows that this is the first time an Inter Senior Team has been top of their league since 1995. Well done to players, management and those brave souls that have been at Inter Kenmare Park cheering them on. Keep it up!

Sunday 28th December
Premier Division B
Inter Kenmare 3 - 1 Currans
Inter Kenmare cruised to a 3-1 victory on Sunday, against a visiting Currans team.
While the visitors were third from bottom, they had a small number of games played before this and were an unknown quantity. Inter started well though and were three nil up after 45 minutes. This could have been 5 or 6 though, as the referee disallowed two goals, one for a dubious offside, and awarded a number of free kicks for uncertain reasons through the game.
Inter's scorers were Matt Zoeller (again) with two, and Steven O'Shea with one.
Inter tried to shut up shop for the second half, and nearly managed a clean sheet, but Currans managed to get through for one. Final score Inter 3, Currans 1.
This result was enough to ensure that Inter finished 2008 on top of Premier B. Killorglin are two behind, but do have a game in hand. 6 league wins in a row is the best on record since the 1995 season, and with the effort that's going in not we see no reason why this can't continue. Best for Inter were Matt "Can't feel my toes" Zoeller, Steven, Gary Cassidy and Phillip Duggan.

Sunday 21st December
Premier Division B
Lenaghmore 1 - 2 Inter Kenmare
Inter made one of the longest trips of the season on a dark wet day, to deepest darkest North Kerry. The last time we made this trip in 2006, we arrived three minutes late to find that the home team had claimed the points and adjourned to the pub. So a full squad left the square with time to spare. Facilities in Lenaghmore had improved since we last made the trip, and a good surface led to a good game. Inter took the lead through Steven o'Shea, but with 5 minutes left, Lenaghmore equalised. A draw looked the likely result, until a Lenaghmore player handled on the line to prevent a certain goal. Penalty. Amazingly the player in question was allowed to stay on the pitch. Alan Cassidy had just come on the pitch as a substitute, and bravely stood up to take the penalty, sticking it straight down the middle. Inter held on to get three of the hardest points available, especially given the long trip.

Sunday 21st December
Division 1 B
Inter Kenmare B 4 - Castleisland B 2
On a day when the seniors had a squad of 14 in North Kerry, manager Jason Taylor had a busy week ensuring all available B players were at home for a fixture against a string Castleisland B. He duly came up trumps with a good squad - having big numbers at training is certainly paying off. Taylor himself got an early Christmas present when Seamus Cremin put a ball across the square for a tap in. Castleisland almost equalised befor half time, after a sequence of four corners, and had a free shot on the keeper from 6 yards. Ronan Twomey proved his worth in goals though, and threw himself at the ball, blocking it with his face. After half time though, Castleisland did get the equaliser, winning a "second ball" in the Inter box and finishing it. And 5 minutes later they attached down the left and got in for the lead goal. Being honest, Inter looked in trouble at this stage, but some changes were made, with Denis O'Shea coming on. He got stuck in from the start, and things started moving again, Connie Cremin getting in for the equaliser. And with twenty five minutes to go Cremin scored again with a short  range finish from after a free kick. The manager made another move at this stage, bringing on Sean Schmidt and Ruairi Bachofner on the left wing. The two boys started to combine well, and after a good move, Sean Schmidt found himself free in the box and was taken down for a penalty. This is becoming a habit of Sean's, he is proving too quick and cute for B defenders. Connie Cremin grabbed the ball straight away, and buried the penalty to seal his hat trick, marking a great return to soccer after a run with Kilgarvan hurlers. Great win here for the Bs in what is proving to be the best B season for years.

Apologies for the updates being slightly irregular over the last month, our website correspondent is finding it hard to get time at the moment, but normal service will resume in January. Some highlights this month:

November 30th

Division 1 B Tralee Dynamos 2 Inter Kenmare 3

Inter's B team made the annual trip to Dynamos and came out the right side of a 3-2 scoreline. Dynamos took an early lead with a break after heavy Inter pressure. However soon after Joe Sheehan forced a throw on the right, and this led to Robert Hodnett setting up Jason Taylor for the equaliser. Just before half time Inter forced a series of corners, and from the third one Donal Casey won a header which Sean Schmidt finished to the net with a header. This was Sean's first senior goal for the club and he celebrated in style. After half time, Inter should have gone 3-1 up straight away, but Jason Taylor managed to miss a header after good play on the left wing. Then Robert Hodnett missed a sitter from 18 inches. Finally the third came, Taylor slotting home after a great move. At this stage the game opened up completely, and it looked like Inter would get four or five. However Dynamos forced a scrappy goal from a free kick, and Inter managed to see out the game. Best for Kenmare on the day were Tim Crowley at left back, Joe Sheehan, Jason Taylor and Robert Hodnett.

November 30th

Ladies League Killorglin 2-3 Inter Kenmare

The ladies travelled to Killorglin on a cold Sunday to play a team tipped to do very well in this league. They tore into Killorglin from the start, and had much the better of the first half, and went three-one up by half time, with two goals from (surprise surprise) Roisin Boyle and Michelle O'Sullivan. Killorglin came back into it in the second half, got one goal and were pushing hard for an equaliser. Elaine O'Neill got in some hard tackles and ensured they were kept out. Best for Inter were the goal scorers Michelle and Roisin, Elaine O'Neill, Suzanne Teahan, Majella O'Sullivan and Emer O'Sullivan. Abbeydorney are up next for the ladies, who are in with a real chance of winning the league at this stage.

November 23rd

Killorglin 0-4 Inter Kenmare

Fantastic Away win against the league leaders. Inter dominated this one from start to finish, and took a 1-0 lead to half time through a Matt Zoeller goal. Inter Turned to play with a strong wind in the second half, and Sean Murphy took advantage with a

40-yard free kick that the 'keeper made a mess of. Connie Cremin and Matt Zoeller again finished the scoring. Best on the day were Sean Murphy, Marcin Urbisch and Matt Zoeller.

November 6th

Under-14s continue unbeaten start to the season

Inter under14s have reached the mid-point of the season unbeaten. After fine victories over Camp and Killorglin, Inter faced a home game against Asdee. It was an under strength line-up after several withdrawals, some through injury and some playing a different code in Waterford.

Both teams started slowly and the game was very scrappy. The first bit of quality came after 10 minutes, a fine ball from the left found the head of Shane O’Sullivan who guided it past the Asdee keeper. Any thoughts that this would settle Inter proved short lived as both teams found it difficult to impose themselves. Half way through the first half some slack defending from Kenmare allowed Asdee to fire home a hardly deserved equaliser. This seemed to fire up the away side who, sensing a shock could be on the cards began to dominate the midfield though neither side create another opening before half time.

After some harsh words at half time and some tinkering in midfield Inter at last began to play. Sub Johnnie Breen and Finbar Quill began to dominate the midfield, allowing Inter to at last get their passing game going. Dean Cassidy had several good strikes on goal from the edge of the box but it was one of those days where he always seemed to find the Asdee keeper. Despite the second half being played constantly in the opposition’s half Kenmare could not make their dominance count and the game petered out to a 1-1 draw.

Asdee were definitely the happier of the two teams at the final whistle but Kenmare can take heart from a good second half performance, especially considering the players we had missing. Our fourth game of the season took us to Tralee to play St. Bernard’s. Definitely an unknown quantity, Kenmare were unsure just what to expect. To make matters worse we found out just before kick off that we would be playing on the old Park pitch; small, sloping and bumpy, not a pitch to play the ‘beautiful’ game on. We had Cian Long, Brian Clifford and Brian and Gavin Crowley back but were missing Finbar Quill, our find of the season. We were also very happy to welcome back Colm O’Sullivan for his first game of the season. Let’s hope we can keep him fit.

As goal scoring had proved difficult for us this year coach James Kennedy tried a changed line up. Central defender Brian Clifford was pushed up front to partner Brian Clifford with Jordan O’Connor and James De Silva combining in central defence.

The game turned out to be an extraordinary affair. Kenmare went 1 up early on with a goal from Brian Clifford. St Bernard’s came back almost immediately and unbelievably were 2-1 ahead with only 15 minutes gone. However, further goals from Brian Clifford and Brian Crowley meant Inter were going in at half time 4-2 up.

The second half proved just as extraordinary. Suffice to say that by the full time whistle Kenmare has emerged as winners, by 10 goals to 5. More a rugby score than a soccer one! Brian Crowley ended the game with 4 goals; Brian Clifford also scored 4 with one apiece from Gavin Crowley, his first of the season and Colm O’Sullivan.

At the half way stage of the season Inter are second in the table behind Park. Some interesting statistics, Kenmare have scored 2 goals in 2 games at home and 17 goals in 2 games away from home.

Brian Clifford in Kerry panel

We are pleased to announce that Brian Clifford has been selected for the Kerry under-14 panel. His performances again this season have been of the highest quality and this has obviously not gone unnoticed at county level. We’ll keep you up to date with his progress.

U13 Cup match November 25th  Kenmare –v-  Ballynanty Rovers

This cup match was a difficult match for Inter facing a Limerick City club team which are second in their premier league.  Despite our obvious physical disadvantage we worked as a team and played some nice football on a pitch which was getting a little heavy. Ballynanty did have more threatening moments in front of our goal but did not really break through our defence with their goal attempts, although good, mostly arising from shots from a little distance which where handled superbly by our goalie Mark O’Callahgan who did not put a foot or hand wrong in this game.  Inter did go-ahead thanks to a glancing header from Radec Kovac but this only spurned the opposition to pile forward.  Half time 1-0,   The second half saw more ballynanty attacks but our defence was on top of most of these be it with the help some hand of god stuff. We still played better football at times and indeed scored a second goal by Fintan Kennedy,It was backs to the wall stuff in the last 15 minutes but we held out and could have scored a third if it wasn’t for the bar.

Full time : 2-0

Man of the match : All 15 of them.

This was a gallant team effort.  Lets keep this going.

The last few weeks have been busy for Inter Kenmare, both on and off the pitch.

It’s only mid-November, and already 50+ games have been played, more than thirty of which have been at home. Despite some of the worst weather on record, both pitches are holding up well, and better than most other soccer pitches in Kerry. Great credit is due to Jason Taylor and his helpers for this. First up this month was a trip to the Kerry District League grounds for the official opening of the grounds, where Inter Collected a commemorative cheque from FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney for funding received in 2008. Mr. Delaney was as always extremely interested in developments in Kenmare and pledged his support to the club for ongoing and future work.

Daly Domination at Quiz

The club hosted an extremely successful Quiz Night in the Coachmans on Friday last, which saw a great turnout – all available tables were filled. The

Winners were:

1st Jpeg – Captain Elaine Daly

2nd Daly1 – Captain Sean Daly

As you can see, this was a family affair, and was hotly contested but Jpeg shaded this with a tie-break winner to take home the Inter Kenmare Quiz Trophy. The club would like to thank all teams who participated, and our big team of helpers on the

night. Great credit is due to the winning teams who contributed their winning prize-money to Inter Kenmare Development.

Saturday 1st November 2008

U12 Prem

Inter Kenmare 5 -2 Ballyhar Dynamos

Inter Kenmare will be happy to have picked up a valuable three points in their clash with Ballyhar where they won 5-2. Two from Stephen O’Sullivan and one from Fionan O’Sullivan put Inter 3-0 up but Ballyhar showed great heart pulling it back to 3-2 with goals from William Courtney and Conor O’Leary. However when Fionan O’Sullivan got his second and Inter’s fourth the game was over for Ballyhar.

Great win for the boys, hopefully they can kick on from here.

The other tow goals came from Gavin Crowley and Gavin O’Sullivan.

U16 Prem

Killarney Athletic 7 -0 Inter Kenmare

Bad day out. Enough said.

Youths Premier

Ballyhar Dynamos 2-5 Inter Kenmare

The youths are off the mark this year after an important away win on Saturday. On a cold cold day in Ballyhar Inter started well, and with Steven O’Shea finding spoace in midfield to place through balls for his strikers, Inter forced a penalty, which Steven stuck away. However five minutes later, John Butler was juidged to have pushed a Ballyhar striker and gave away a penalty. 1-1.

After half time though, Inter took over this game, and Ruairi Bachofner, who troubled Ballyhard all day, made up for his first half misses wiuth a well-taken goal. Inter were totally dominant at this stage, and Sean Sheehan took advantage with a well-taken shot to the roof of the net. The ref found a way to give Ballyhar a chance with a harsh penalty against Steven O’Shea for handball. Ballyhar had one excellent striker, and he slotted his second penalty, to make it 2-3. Inter sorted things out quickly though, and killed the game off with goals from O’Shea and Ruairi Bachofner to make it 5-2. This was a very encouraging performance, and gives great hope for the rest of the season. It’s hard to single out anyone, but Tim Crowley, john Butler, Sean Sheehan, Steven O’Shea and Aaron O’Callaghan all stood out. Two of the under 16s played in this game, Michael O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Shea, and Kieran had a brilliant debut. Finally man-of-the match Ruairi Bachofner will have been happy with his day out and his first double for the club.

Inter Kenmare 2 – 0 Castlegregory

The seniors got a very welcome three points on Sunday at home to Castlegregory, who had won most of their games before coming to Kenmare. The first half was dull, with new centre-half Connie Cremin settling in well at the back. All the action was reserved for the second half here, and Inter survived one or two scary moments after half time, and finally started to get on top, mainly through good work by Matt Zoeller. A good move involving Matt, Shannon Ryan and Steven O’Shea led to a goalmouth scramble, and Steven O’Shea’s shot was handled, leading to a penalty. Shannon Ryan’s shot was saved, but Phillip Duggan followed up brilliantly for his first goal since records began. Inter were now on top, and pushed on, forcing a series of corners, thr third of which was headed home by Shane Dalton. There were a couple of scares after this, where Gary Cassidy made on particularly good save with his feet, and Inter spent the last 15 minutes keeping Castlegregory out to record a very welcome win.

Club Draw 12th Oct 2008

Inter completed a club draw on October 12th as part of the ongoing fundraising efforts. This was in conjunction with the upcoming Ireland v Cyprus senior International. Through club links with the FAI, tickets can be sourced via the club, with regular ticket purchasers given priority for tickets for “sold-out” games in the future.

The results of the draw were:

1st 2 x Ireland v Cyprus match tickets and travel expenses – Joshua Holland.

2nd Club tracksuit with initials – Chantelle Reidy.

Nice to see that the two winners are genuine fans, big club supporters and promising soccer players as well. This was a good day for Josh Holland as he received notification that, along with team-mate Fionan O’Sullivan has made the Kerry Under 12 squad for the year. Inter aren’t finished with this squad either, check here for reports on the progress of Patrick Clifford who has been impressing in training also.

The club would like to extend thanks to all who sold and bought tickets for this event.

U11GIRLS Killarney Celtic V Inter Kenmare 12.00;

Huge win for Inter against their illustrious opponents in this one,

Kenmare were too strong for Celtic and goals from Denise Byrnes (4), Susan O’Sullivan (2) and one from Orla Randles gave them all three points.

U12PREM Listowel Celtic V Inter Kenmare 11.45

4-2

Listowel Celtic got an important win 4- 2 over Inter Kenmare.

U14DIV1 Inter Kenmare V Asdee 11.45

1-1

Shane O'Sullivan had Inter in front after 15 minutes with a neat finish to a good move. However Asdee equalised after a cross and finish just before halftime. Inter had all the play in the second half, and with James Da Silva and Ryan Van Der Venter lording it at the back, Denis O'Neill and Dean Cassidy were free to push on in midfield, and these two in particular had Asdee in all kinds of trouble. However the Asdee 'keeper was up to the job, and kept Kenmare out. A noticeable feature here was Inter's discipline, the North kerry lads had a serious bit of bite to them, and they picked up four yellow cards, which is a lot, and our lads didn't react - this shows the good coaching they're getting from Jim Kennedy. Best for Inter were James, Denis and Dean, while sub John Breen showed real willigness to work and had a very good 30 minutes.

U15GIRLS  Inter Kenmare V Listowel 1.15

1-0

Great win for Inter, scored after 5 minutes with an excellent passing move, Siobhan Kennedy putting the goal on a plate for Sarah Murphy, who stuck it in the corner. Inter then held their own for the rest of the game, and defended their lead well to earn a great 3 points - Listowel don't drop too many! Best for Inter were  Aoife Gallagher and Rachel Hawker.

League: Ladies v Mounthawk 11.30

0-0

Tough game in terrible conditions on Sunday morning, between two of the stronger sides in the league. Inter had chances in this game, but nothing really clear-cut. Nora-Mai O'Brien was sharp in the Inter goal and cleared up a lot of ball. With the defence solid in front of her, Mounthawk only had one shot of note on target.

The weather cleared up towards the end of the game, but there were not a lot of chances in this one, but on balance Mounthawk will be happier picking up a point away from home. Best for Inter were the goalie, Elaine O'Neill and Gina Crowley. Best of luck to the girls in the upcoming county football final next weekend.

Div 1B: Senior B's     v Mainebank 2.30

2-2

A welcome point for the B team, but possibly two points dropped.

Inter got into this game after 10 minutes, and had a number of chances before a good move by Matt Zoeller saw him squaring to Jason Taylor for an easy finish. Alan Casidy had a great shot saved soon after, but against the run of play Mainebank equalised with a great dribble and shot by thewir main striker.. And they got a second from the same man just before half time.

Inter put on all the pressure in the second half, and after a series of corner and free kicks, (with one certain goal disallowed!) Alan Cassidy finnaly got the equaliser direct from a 25-yard free kick. inter pushed on, but could not make the breakthrough.Best players: Anthony Sheehan, Alan Cassidy, Matt Zoeller and Seamus Cremin.

FAI Junior Cup

Inter Kenmare v Rathkeale AFC 2.30 Inter Kenmare Park

Sunday Oct 12th FAI Junior Cup

Inter Kenmare 3-3 Rathkeale AFC

(Rathkeale  Won 4-3 on Penalties)

On Sunday Rathkeale from the Limerick Desmond league were visitors to Inter Kenmare Park in the second round of the FAI Junior Cup. Despite hosting five games the previous day, the pitch was in perfect condition and led to some lovely football being played. Rathkeale were quicker out of the blocks, and went 1-0 up after about 20 minutes. Declan Nash, their top striker, finished off a good chance with ease from 10 yards. Matthias Zoeller then made a breakthrough for Inter on the stroke of half-time when he was hauled down for a penalty. Shannon Ryan stepped up, and hit a good penalty but the keeper got down quickly and go it away.

Five minutes after half time, Rathkeale sent in a hopeful free kick from the left, and one of their midfielders got a head to it to send it past Gary Cassidy in the Inter goal. 2-0. At this stage, Inter made changes, bringing on Paul Cassidy, and slowly got to grips with the game. Matt Zoeller, Steven O’Shea and Sean Murphy started to take on and beat their men, and Matt was hauled back again by the same player, this time for a free but it earned the Rathkeale centre-half a red card. At this stage Inter took over completely. With Paul Cassidy pulling the strings in midfield, Zoeller and O’Shea started to make progress, and these two combined to force the ball home from short range. After another good Cassidy/O’Shea move, Sean Murphy then sent in a cross for Shane Dalton to equalise. At the final whistle, the score was 2-2, and meant extra-time was needed.

At this stage Inter looked fresher, and after 4 minutes Matt Zoeller found himself clear in front of goal and made no mistake. Nothing else happened for the first half of extra time, Rathkeale did have a couple of attacks but Gary Cassidy dealt with them easily.  With three minutes to go in the second half of extra time, Paul Cassidy fell awkwardly after winning a header, and lay in a heap on the ground. Inter duly kicked out the ball to get attention on for their player. However instead of throwing the ball back to Inter, Rathkeale played on, and went on the attack. From this move their striker got into the box, and although he seemed to handle the ball, he tumbled over and somehow got a penalty. And they scored it. The final whistle blew two minutes later.

This brought us to penalties. The first two for each team were missed, Gary Cassidy making great saves for Inter’s two. Shane Dalton. Sean Murphy and Shannon Ryan scored three of the next five, but unfortunately Rathkeale got one extra, to end up 4-3 winners.  A sad end to a great game, and this gives Inter great encouragement for the rest of the season – Rathkeale were better than any of the teams we have seen this year so far and given the team spirit shown to dig out this result there is every reason to be optimistic for the games to come. Best for Kenmare were ‘Keeper Cassidy, Matt Zoeller, Shane Dalton and Shannon Ryan. Paul Cassidy also made a big difference from the bench.

Under 14’s in perfect start to the season after Brian Crowley hat trick downs Killorglin

Inter under 14s have got off to the perfect start with two good wins.

In the close season we lost three of our stalwarts, Denis O’Neill, Cian Hallissey and Adrian Spillane who all announced their retirement. However, we also made a couple of new signings, Finbar Quill and Jackie Healy-Rae.

At home against Camp in our opener we showed signs of rustiness and took a long while to get started. However, we battled well and with debutante Finbar Quill working tirelessly in midfield we gradually took control of the game. This battling quality led to our goal. Brian Crowley fought hard on the left, winning the ball from the Camp left back. He delivered in a great cross for Shane O’Sullivan, who fired home a volley from six yards into the roof of the net. We continued to press forward for our second, with the Camp keeper making a great save from Brian Crowley and then brother Gavin’s run and shot rebounding from the upright. A second goal was not to come but we never looked in danger of conceding and ran out a well deserved 1-0 win.

Our second match was away to Killorglin. Again we started slowly, though this may have been in no small measure to losing club captain Cian Long with hamstring trouble in the first five minutes. Replacement Ryan Van Deventer however proved an able replacement and performed steadily at right back.

As we began to settle our play improved. A Gavin Crowley free kick from the right found the head of Brian Clifford who guided the ball into the Killorglin net. Then came the moment of the match. Stand in goalkeeper Johnnie Breen was lobbed and a goal looked certain. However, even under pressure from a Killorglin attacker Jordan O’Connor chased back and somehow cleared the ball off the line. A minute later we went two up. A fine strike from the edge of the area by Brian Crowley added the second before the same player stroked home a third from the penalty spot after being brought down. 3-0 at half time.

Killorglin started well in the second half and a great long range effort put them back in the game. However, two goals from Shane O’Sullivan and another for hat trick hero Brian Crowley gave the game and points to Internazionale. Late on, sub Fintan ‘Fintaniano’ Kennedy added the seventh. A fine 7-2 victory.

Tougher matches lie ahead for us, particularly in the shape of Park and Dingle but these two wins have certainly put us in a strong position to challenge for silverware this year.

All the best to Colm O’Sullivan, who has missed the start of the season through injury. We wish him a swift and speedy recovery.

The Inter Kenmare goals came from Dean Cassidy who proved his worth from dead ball situations scoring from a free kick and from the penalty spot. Radic Kovac got the third while Mantas Valukonis got the Killorglin consolation. Great result for a strong under 13 side, suberbly managed on the day by Craig and a team of emergency helpers - you know who you are!

Ladies Premier:  Killarney Celtic v Inter Kenmare 11.00

3-2 to Celtic

The ladies put up a strong showing in this clash between two title contenders. This was an excellent game of soccer, and this was remarked on on the day by a number of people. Inter started strongly and went into a 2-0 lead, with both goals coming from Roisin Boyle. However this group had played a number of games over the last week, and ran out of steam towards the end, with Celtic notching the winner with two minutes to go. This was almost a pint gained, but there is still great hope for the rest of the season. Excellent performances from Rosisn Boyle, Michelle Casey, and Laura O'Sullivan, but this was really a good team performance and the girls deserved better.

Senior Division 1 South:  Mastergeeha v Inter Kenmare 2.30

2-0 to Mastergeeha.

This was an entertaining game played on Sunday afternoon, with Inter giving Mastergeeha's first team plenty to think about. However they finished up on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline. Best for Inter were gary Sheehan, Donal Casey and Eoin Finnegan. Sean Schmidt came on with 30 minutes to go for his senior debut and didn't put a foot wrong.

U14 Division 1 - Inter Kenmare 1 v 0Camp

Great start for the under 14's, who beat Camp 1 nil.

Inter Kenmare got their campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Camp. Their goal scorer was Shane O’Sullivan who got on the end of a Brian Crowley cross. Finbarr Quill was also impressive on the day, as was the defensive pairing of James Da Silva and Brian Clifford.

U12PREM      Killarney Celtic V Inter Kenmare

Inter took a beating in this game. It was competitive in the first half, but Celtic, who were very strong on the night, were three-nil up by the half. They then proceeded to score right from the kick-off, and as Kenmare heads dropped, ran riot. Final score 8-0. Inter's under 12s are much better than this though, a number of them are with the Kerry Academy at the moment, and we expect a much better showing from them, especially at Inter Kenmare Park.

Results/Reports from Weekend of Sept 12th/13th

U-11 Bs Off to a Winning Start.

This year, Inter have put together two under 11 teams, to cater for the huge demand, and to make sure games are available for all players. The under 11 Bs, in ther first game, did new managers Steven o’ Shea and Matt Zoeller proud on Saturday. Games against Killarney Celtic are never easy, and this was no exception, wiuth the Killarney team much bigger and physically stronger, and this told in the first few minutes when Celtic were on top, with ‘Keeper John Crowley called into action twice. However big opposition means nothing to players like Sean Casey, and some great tackling and work by Inter’s main players got them on top in this game. It was 0-0 at half time, with both sides having good chances. In the second half, inter really got into this game. Aaron Morris and Patrick McCarthy got on top at the back, and started to push forwards. Simon O’Shea came into his own at left back, and kept Inter moving up the wing. And Sean Casey kept frustrating bigger, stronger Killarney players by taking the ball off them and then going past them. Inter finally got he breakthrough with 10 minutes to go, when Patrick McCarthy crossed for Captain Tom Gudgeon to score. Patrick got in another cross 5 minutes later, this time for Jordan Whyte to finish with his left foot. Best for Kenmare were Aaron Morris and Patcrick McCarthy, Tom Gudgeon and Jordan Whyte in Midfield, Darren maye up front. Player of the match was Sean Casey.

U11 A Listowel Celtic 8-1 Inter Kenmare

The under 11 a team had a tough start on Saturday, where they were well beaten by Listowel. This wasn’t a realistic scoreline, as everything Listowel hit on the day went in. Pat Spillane scored for Kenmare, who won’t have any harder games than this one.

U15 Killarney Athletic 1-0 Inter Kenmare

Killarney Athletic came out on the right side of a 1-0 result over Inter Kenmare with the goal coming from Colm Tobin 15 minutes into the second half. Tadgh Morley and Patrick Moriarty played well for Inter.

Youths Inter Kenmare 1-2 Killarney Celtic

Killarney Celtic came to Kenmare with a good side on Saturday evening last, and left with threee points they scarcely deserved. Inter had the better of the first half, especially down the left side where Chris McCarthy and Dara Crowley had Celtic in all kinds of trouble. After 25 minutes Celtic took off their left winger to try and stop the damage, and this seemed to work. After a scoreless first half, Celtic’s midfielder ran on to a short Inter clearance and volleyed it just inside the post from 20 yards. Very quickly after this, Inter got caught on the break for a second. Inter could have fallen apart at this stage, but instead got right back in the game. Steven O’Shea was moved to a wide position, and he and Aaron O’Callaghan combined down the right side to put Killarney under pressure. With 10 minutes to go, Aaron made a run out of defence, and passed to Steven. O’Shea’s long pass put Jason O’Shea clean through, and Jason hammered it home with his right foot. As hard as Inter tried, they couldn’t get a second one. Best for Inter were Gary Cassidy, Mike Hallissey, Aaron O’Callaghan, Steven O’Shea and Jason O’Shea.

Senior B Inter Kenmare 1-3 Behy Rovers

A classic strike from Colm Walsh from 25 yards couldn’t save Inter in this game against a strong Behy side. Best for Inter were Tim Crowley, Colm Walsh and Dermot Casey.

Senior A Inter Kenmare 2-3 Spa Road

Spa Road kept up their good start to the season, beating Inter 3-2 on Sunday. Sean Murphy and Shane Dalton scored Inters’ goals, to cut down a 3-0 lead. Time ran out with Inter trying hard for an equaliser, but unfortunately it’s hard to get a result any time three goals go in. There were encouraging performances from Sean Murphy, Shannon Ryan and subs Gary Sheehan and Donal O’Connor, and hopefully this is one of very few losses for the seniors this year.

Sunday, August 31st

Premier Division B

Inter Kenmare F.C. 4, Sneem Santos 2.

On the first day of the season, Inter faced a difficult start, when they faced local rivals Sneem Santos in Kenmare. And it looked like a difficult start to the season when Sneem raced into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, after causing Inter problems with strong play down the right, forcing a series of corners. This called for drastic action before half time, and Inter made changes, with Paul Cassidy moving to the back, and Matthias Zoeller coming on up front. This paid off just after half time, when Steven O'Shea, who had also moved up front, finishing with a volley from an almost impossible angle at the far post.

At this stage, Inter went for broke, bringing on Gary Sheehan and playing with three at the back. Inter kept the play wide, and Sean Murphy had lots of play down the left wing, where the right back was in all sorts of trouble. After a series of attacks, Inter forced a penalty, and Matt Zoeller stepped up to bury it.

Inter kept coming, and managed to force another goal - Sean Murphy cut in from the left, the Sneem keeper saved a shot, and Matt Zoeller put away the rebound. And Inter weren't finished - with three minutes to go, Steven O'Shea intercepted a ball in midfield, lifted it over two Sneem defenders, and was through on goal. He drew the 'keeper, and squared for Matthias Zoeller to complete his hat-trick. Steven is looking forward to his Christmas present already, apparently.

This was a good start for Inter, a local derby is always a tricky first game, and with training going well hopefully the necessary improvements will show over the next few games. Obviously Matt Zoeller had a good game, as did Steven O'Shea. Paul Cassidy was composed as always at the back, and Shannon Ryan and Sean Murphy were the pick of the midfielders.

Monday September 1st

Division 1 South

Killarney Celtic 1, Inter Kenmare 1

Inter travelled to Killarney to kick off the season for the B team. A noticeable feature here was the strength of the squad that travelled. At this stage of the season it is not always possible to give games to all players (14 per game) but over the season and on Wednesday night friendly games, all players will get plenty of chances.

In this game, Inter had their hands full against a strong and youthful Celtic team, and fell behind after a goalmouth scramble on the 35-minute mark.

However, the second half was a different story, and Inter really got into the game, with Eoin Finnegan and Jason Taylor prominent up front, and Dermot Casey and Robin Clifford easily winning the midfield battle. Alan Cassidy, who had come on for the injured Tim Crowley, kept making good breaks down the left, and this paid off when his shot from distance went under the Celtic 'keeper and made it 1-1. At this stage, Killarney were in trouble, and Inter threatened from corners and free kicks. At the back, Shane Dalton and Donal O'Sullivan were secure, and Gary Cassidy never put a foot wrong in goals. In fact we discovered that Gary has a decent left foot, which Shane Dalton picked out with a series of back passes!.

In the end, Inter ran out of time, but left Killarney with a valuable point, from one of the most difficult games of the season. Best for Inter were Alan and Gary Cassidy, Donal O'Sullivan and Eoin Finnegan. Tim Crowley also had a good game before going off, in his first game of senior soccer.

Ladies Seniors

Since our last update, the ladies senior team has been going from strength to strength. in our first game, Killarney Celtic were beaten 4-1. Ballyhar were beaten 4-0, and in the first away game, Mastergeeha were beaten by a massive 8-0. This leaves Inter at the top of the table, and in the good position of having more games played than anyone else.

We're currently on a break for two weeks, and will resume games after this - there are tough games to come against some of the established teams, like Killarney Celtic away, Mounthawk and Abbeydorney, but everyone at the club has high hopes for the coming year.

August

Inter had the first title of the season when an Inter Kenmare team finished in first place in the Kerry District Schoolboys League Golf Classic. Congratulations to Jim Kennedy and his team of fellow bandits who are somehow allowed to keep their handicaps despite an ever-increasing collection of golf prizes. On a serious note, the club would like to extend their thanks to the team, as participation from Inter in League events of all types helps the club maintain profile with the league.

Underage Ladies

The underage ladies team have been presented with their Team of the year award from last year. See them collecting their award below.
