Inter Kenmare August 2008 Update
Seven-a-Side
The main focus during late July and August has been on the Annual Seven-a-Side tournament. This season’s tournament proved to be a great success, with a big effort put in from more than 20 club members in the organisation. Between July 23rd and August 8th, we saw 56 games, hundreds of goals, a small number of cards issued, and three great finals. Approximately 230 players took part in the sevens, with the vast majority of them from the Kenmare area.
The finals took place on Friday, August 8th at
Reserve Cup Final
Kelmac Kitchens 2-1 Rochmans
Kelmac were firm favourites for this one, but got a shock when a very competitive Rochmans scored first, through Andre Kovac. Kelmac needed a wonder goal from the centre circle by Wayne Hayes to draw level. At this stage, Kelmac started to keep the ball better, with player-manager Colum Kelleher pulling the strings in midfield. As the game went on, Rochmans were restricted to the occasional break from the back, mainly through Padraig Jones, and Kelmac hit the post when they should have scored. Finally the breakthrough came, and it was Wayne Hayes who got his second on the night. Colum Kelleher took the player of the game award, and he was well helped by Wayne Hayes and Con Godfrey. Andre Kovac, Martin Urbisch and Padraig Jones were best for Rochmans.
Ladies Cup Final
As was the case for the whole competition, this was a highly entertaining game. There was very little doubt that this game was between the best two teams, and they served up a great final. Gutters scored first after 3 minutes, with Michelle Casey hitting the top corner from 20 yards. At this stage, Michelle and Roisin Boyle were runnig riot, and things looked bad for
In the second half,
Premier Cup Final
O’Mahony Engineering 1-1(2-1P) Connor-Scarteens
The premier event of the evening kicked off at 7.45, on a perfect pitch (thanks to the hard work of Jason Taylor and his helpers). It became clear very early on that these teams were a standard above everything else in the competition. This was a contrast in styles, with O’Mahonys looking to keep the ball, while Scarteens looked for the early ball to their main man up front, Gerald O’Dwyer, most of the time. When playing one of these early balls Scarteens midfielder John Granville spotted the O’Mahony’s keeper Dan Keane off his line, and placed the ball in the net from 35 yards. Scarteens then settled back to defend their lead, and kept it until there were 10 minutes left. A good move from O’Mahonys resulted in Ronan Hussey putting in a low cross for Phillip Duggan to make it 1-1. This meant we were heading for extra time. Scarteens made the maximum use fo their bench, and put some pressure on O’Mahony’s in extra time, but there were no clear chances for either side. This brought the game to penalties. Dan Keane saved the first, with a great dive to his left. This was a shot that he should really not have been near. Even though Gerald O’Dwyer scored a great penalty for Mahony’s, this was Dan Keane’s shootout, and he saved again from Jonathan McCarthy to win the game.
Player of the game was Phillip Duggan, and Shannon Ryan, Ronan Hussey were also good. For Connor Scarteens, Jonathan McCarthy, John Granville and Jerry O’Sullivan Top-Cross were best.

Senior Season Draws to a Close
The senior men’s season has finally come to an end, for both the A and B team. Inters’ B Team secured a fantastic 3-0 win over Tralee Dynamos on the last day of the season to stave off relegation. Sean Sheehan made his debut for Inter at adult level, and he and Sean O’Leary gave an exhibition up front, bagging three goals between them. Robin Clifford and PJ Reidy also had good games at the back. Inter beat a strong Dynamos team without giving them a look-in. This was the second win for the B’s against Dynamos this season.
The A Team also had a busy month, the highlight of which was a 2-2 draw away to Killarney Celtic in a cup quarter final. Unfortunately this was a chance missed, and Celtic won the replay convincingly. In the last game of the season, the team went down 4-2 to Rattoo in Ballyduff. Inter were slow out of the blocks in this one and were 2-0 down before they woke up. Steven O’Shea put a nice volley in off the post, to make it 2-1 at half time. With 30 minutes to go, Mattie Clifford robbed the Rattoo goalkeeper, and set up Eoin Finnegan for a delicate chip into the net. Inter decided the game was there for the taking, but got caught on the break for a Rattoo goal. The fourth was scored, again on the break, in the last minute.
Ladies Season About to Kick Off
At the time of writing, the ladies senior team are preparing for the first league game of the season, against Killarney Celtic. Match report to follow in the next issue.

Inter u10 Game v Manchester Opposition
St James the Less From Manchester visited Kenmare this month as part of their yearly tour of Kerry. Inter provided the opposition for their under 10 side. This was a great opportunity for Inter’s under 10 side, as they don’t have a league competition until they graduate to the under 11 side next year.
This was a good game, and some of the visting side’s players were of a very high standard. Inter started well, and had St. James’ under pressure early on, but conceded a goal on the break, to turn around 1-0 down at half time. In the second half, Inter equalised, but got caught on the break for two good goals.
The loss was slightly unfair on Inter, as the team gave as good as they got for the whole hour. Patrick Spillane put in the best run of the day, beating no less than 6
Best for Kenmare on the day were Daniel Taylor who was neat and tidy at the back, Patrick Spillane and man of the match, ‘Keeper Ray O’Shea.
Thanks to the mobile catering army who managed to feed 50 under 10s and a number of parents and officials at very short notice – the standard of catering has improved again from the high standards set last month!
New Coaches and Members Needed
At this time of the year, planning is underway for next season, and new coaches and committee members are always welcome. Full F.A.I training is provided, and any new coach will be teamed with an experienced coach at the start. Girls and Boys coaches are needed. If you possibly have kids involved or need an excuse to get some exercise this might be for you. Also committee members are always welcome. If you’re interested in either contact any of the Inter Committee members (details at the top of the page).
Seniors Winning Run
Inter’s Senior team managed to win every game they played this month. First up were Currans in the Greyhound Bar Cup, who were roundly beaten 4-1, with goals from Ger O’Dywer, Phillip Duggan and Steven O’Shea (2). Currans were short some key players, but managed to make things difficult until Kenmare pulled away from them with 2 quick goals from Steven O’Shea and Phillip Duggan in the second half. The highlights in this game were a defence-splitting pass from Donal Casey to Phillip Duggan for Inter’s second, and a 25-yard volley into the top corner from Steven O’Shea.
Next up were poits from games against AC Athletic and Tralee Celtic, meaning that relegation was no longer an issue for Inter, and a steady move up the table continued.
In the Reserver Cup, Inter beat
Finally, Inter played Mastergeeha away in the next round of the Greyhound Bar cup. This was a tricky game, against up-and-coming opposition. ‘Geeha went 1-0 up, before Gerald O’Dywer hammered in a goal into the top corner from an impossible angle. Inter then grabbed a second through Steven O’Shea fired home the winner.
Best for Kenmare on the night were the goalscorers and Mattie Clifford.
So this was an excellent month for the seniors, and next month we’ll be reporting on Cup Semi-Finals and hopefully looking forward to at least one final in July.
Seven-a-Side
7-a-side time is here again, and it’s time to be dusting off those boots and getting teams ready for the 7’s. We hope to play this off during the month of July, but exact times and dates have not been finalised yet. So keep an eye out for posters and advertising in the next couple of weeks, and check www.interkenmare.com for details.

Inter over 35s Draw 2-2 in
On Friday May 9th, an Inter Kenmare over 35 selection played a visiting French side U.S. Maisons from
In the second half, the better conditioning of the French side came to the fore, and they kept the ball and put Inter under severe pressure. At this stage Declan O'Neill was everywhere, and really showed his fitness. Inter managed a couple of breaks through good play by Jim O'Shea and Paul Cassidy, the best of which fell to Pat O'Connor who had been moved up front as he was showing the best fitness at this stage, but he drove the ball just over. Inevitably, Maisons got the goal they were looking for, making the score 2-2 on the night.
It's unfair to single out best performers for Kenmare, as all players put in a huge effort on the night. A great function was held afterwards in the Coachmans, and Declan O'Neill was awarded man of the match for Inter. On the evidence of the night, there were quite a few sore bodies and heads the next morning. Training will be commencing early next year for the return trip to

U11s Cup Run Finally Comes to An End
Inter Kenmare's talented bunch of U11 players have been improving all season, thus when the cup 1/4 final draw paired them with St Brendan's park, top of the premiership and unbeaten all season, there was a feeling Inter could spring a surprise.
The match took place on Park's rather unsatisfactory, uneven reserve pitch, but Inter started brightly and could have scored in their opening attack, Fionan O'Sullivan shooting just wide. In fact Inter dominated the opening 15 minutes and created several promising openings without troubling the Park net, Fionan and Patrick Clifford were proving a threat up front. Park's army of coaches, mentors, physios et al were stunned into silence by this robust start. However Park gained the upper hand , against the run of play, with a long range effort which looped into the Inter goal . This seemed to galvanise Park and despite some heroic defending from Dara O'Siochru, Killian Spillane, Joshua Holland, David Cremin and Alan Murphy Reeve, Park struck again with an identikit strike from the same player. So it was that despite their valiant efforts the Kenmare lads trailed 2-0 at half time.
Once again Inter started brightly with the hardworking central midfield duo of Joshua Holland and Fintan Kennedy imposing themselves on the game and disrupting park's patterns of play, whilst on the wings Stephen O'Sullivan and Cian Moriarty were putting in the hard yards. Finally Inter got the breakthrough they deserved, Fionan O'Sullivan picking up a lose ball on the half way line and slaloming his way (Theo Walcott style) pass several Park defenders, keeping his composure to poke the ball into the Park net, 2-1. One notable feature of the game was the strangle hold that Killian Spillane exerted on Park's ace marksman Jessie O'Sullivan. However Inter failed to deal with a lose ball at a corner and O'Sullivan was on hand on stab the ball into Inter's goal. A fourth goal soon followed.
Inter had brought on Sean Sheehy, Brian O'Sullivan and Pat Spillane in an effort to wrest back the initiative. Fintan Kennedy ,who had been moved to an old fashioned inside left position , undertook some neat footwork before sending in a cross which Fionan O'Sullivan blasted into the roof of the net, 4-2, but with little time left. Inter fought bravely until the final whistle and spurned a couple of chances to take the game into extra time, with the match concluding at 4-2 to Park.
The Inter lads can be exceptionally proud of the mammoth performance they put in against the finest outfit in Kerry soccer at this age group. The lads have laid down a marker that they will be a force to be reckoned with next season.
Many thanks to those who provided transport and came along to support us.

Seniors Still Unbeaten
Inters senior team have continued their unbeated run. On March 2nd they beat Asdee in the Leage Cup replay at home, while on March 9th they earned yet another away draw in the cup, this time away to Spa Road. Donal Casey and Steven O'Shea were the scorers for Kenmare.
U14 Girls
March 2nd V Listowel Celtic
Inter Kenmare's U 14 girls were unlucky not to come away with a point today. Listowel Celtic started quickly and scored within the first few minutes. This seemed to wake up the Kenmare side and both teams had chances but it was not to be for Inter. The defence were outstanding and Geraldine Cahalane fought for every ball and with Michelle O'Connor in goal you could see the confidence grow in the players. Sarah Murphy and Katie O'Shea had a fantastic game in midfield.
Listowel are a good team but Inter showed today that they are capable of holding their own agaimst the best in the division.
Well done to all the girls, what an improvement from the beginning of the season. Keep it up!!
U12 Girls
March 2nd V Killarney Celtic
The u12 girls went down 3-0 to Killarney Celtic in what must be one of the most unkind results of the season. This was a game played with a stong wind, which Inter played with in the first half, and pepperred the Celtic goal with shots, but could not score. In the second half, Inter played well and created two good chances, but in the end Killarney's srength told and they got the vital scores. This Inter team has serious potential though, and it looks like the future of ladies soccer is bright in Kenmare.

Seniors On a Roll...
Inter's Seniors made it 3 games unbeaten with a fine 4-1 victory on the road over Killorglin. Inter scored a first goal after 15 minutes when Daniel Cahalane hammered in a left-foot shot from outside the box that was too quick for the 'Keeper. After 25 minutes INter were 2 ahead, after a good move involving Shannon Ryan, Mike O'Connor and Saniel Cahalane ended with Steven O'Shea scoring. Matteus Zoeller came on at half-time for Steven O'Shea (reasons for this below!) and quickly scored Kenmare's third. Killorglin did manage to get one back with some assistance from the Inter back four but Shannon Ryan scored a fourth for Inter to make it 4-1. This was a good performance and it would be unfair to single anyone out for special mention, hopefully this can turn into a good run for the first team from here.
U'16s Earn Another Point at Home
Inter's under 16 team were at home to Fenit in cold windy conditions on Saturday. This was an important game as Inter are battling with Lisowel for the first division title. Inter took the lead with a goal from James Duncan after some good play and a cross from his twin brother Shane. Unfortunately Fenit equalised soon after. The second half was scoreless and the game finished 1-1. 'Keeper Danny Quinn went on to take the man of the match award for Kenmare, after a solid game. This point now moves Inter to joint top with Camp, with three games left.
O'Shea Called Into the Kerry Squad
Steven O'Shea has accepted a call-up to the Kerry u16 squad and is training with the team every Sunday in Killorglin. This is a great honour for Steven and his family and for the Club. This call-up was inevitable really, as Steven has been playing "out of his skin" and has scored for teams in three grades over the last two weeks (u-16s, u-18s and Seniors).

U11 Boys Draw with Killarney Celtic
The Inter u11 boys team played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Killarney Celtic on Saturday. Scorers for Kenmare were: Fintan Kennedy, Luke Holland and Fionnan O'Sullivan. This was a great performance from Inter, and the team could really have bagged all three points on the day. This is a good group of players, and can really look to improve on their points total in the league next year. Best for Kenmare were Cillian Spillane in defence, Brian O'Sullivan, Patrick Clifford, goalscorers Josh Crowley-Holland and Fionnan O'Sullivan and Man of the Match and goalscorer Fintan Kennedy. Well done lads, and lets go for a couple of wins to finish off the season.
U12 Girls put up a Brave Fight against Celtic
The under 12 girls went down to Killarney Celtic, but put in a much improved performance on Saturday. Inter had a couple of players missing on the day, but the players on duty put in a great show against one of the top teams in Kerry. Layla Mahony was Inter's scorer, and Young Lady of the match was Caoimhe Downing. This was a very encouraging performance from the girls, and if they keep up training and working together like this the future is very bright.
Seniors Still Alive in the League Cup
Inter's first team came away from Asdee with a 1-1 draw on Sunday. This was a long trip and a tough assignment. This was made worse with the departure of Captain Shane Dalton after 5 minutes. Shane was bundled into the Asdee dugout in a tackle and had to leave injured. The dugout survived but Shane took a painful knock and hopefully will be OK for next weekend. Paul Cassidy came off the bench as a replacement. Inter had the better of the game for 20 minutes, and on the 20-minute mark a defence splitting pass (or was it a speculative hoof?) from Connie Cremin put Steven O'Shea clear. Steven put Alan Cassidy in for the lead goal. From this point on, Asdee got back into the game, and after half-time they equalised with a goal coming from a cross on the left. Inter survived the rest of the half and will welcome Asdee to Kenmare for the replay. Best for Kenmare was Steven O'Shea.
Youths Knocked out of the Cup
Inter's youths team were knocked out of the cup this week after a heavy loss to Killorglin, 5-1. Despite the scoreline, Inter put up a good show, with a team that had 7 under-16's starting. Steven O'Shea scored the goal, and along with Steven O'Brien, Mike Hallissey and Tim Crowley, showed to be well able for players who were two years older.
The B team loast 3-0 to Ballybunion. Apologies for the short report but there were very few highlights in this one....

Kerry Under 12 Honours, Cassidy Named as Captain
Dean Cassidy was honoured with the captain's armband for the Kerry Under-12 (First team) in the recent game versus Waterford. This is a massive honour for Dean, his family and the whole club. And to top it off Dean had an excellent game.
Well done Dean, from everybody at the club.
James De Silva and Cillian Harrington also gained Kerry caps this weekend, meaning that Kenmare had 3 players on duty versus Waterford. Well done lads, and keep it up!!
Massive Victories for Kenmare Seniors
Inter Kenmare A's had a historic victory at home to Tralee Dynamos. This could be just the win to kick-start the season, and came after a hard-fought game, with a goal by Gerald O'Dywer the difference between the teams. This has to go down as one of the greatest wins for the team, and brings a much-needed three points.
The B team also had a good day on Sunday, beating Tralee Dynamos (yes, twice in the same day). In a tough game in Tralee, two great goals from Patrick Cremin including a "goal of the year" candidate from 40 yards, led to a 2-1 win.
Good Football from Under 12s V Killarney Athletic
The under 12 team went down 1-0 to Athletic on Saturday, but played some lovely football and were unlucky to lose. If they play like this every week the results will surely look after themselves.
Steven O'Shea Saves the Day for u16s
Inter u16's pulled off a 2-2 draw with Listowel on Saturday. Inter went one up through Sean Sheehan, but Listowel, with a strong team based on a National Cup-winning u15 team, came back to lead 2-1. Steven O'Shea broke through with 3 minutes to go, and was duly brought down for a penalty. Steven showed nerves of steel to get up and bang in the spot kick himself, keeping a great run going for the under 16s.
